Case Study: From Education Lead to Sports Project Manager
Introduction
This client came to me while navigating a period of transition, both professionally and personally. He was preparing to relocate and was working against a clear timeframe, which added urgency to his job search. At the same time, he felt ready to move into a more senior role, having reached a point of stagnation in his current position.
He was particularly interested in moving into project management within the sports sector, but needed support to secure a role that reflected both his experience and his potential.
Assessment
On paper, he was a strong candidate. He had relevant experience, transferable skills, and was already securing interviews for roles in his target area. However, despite reaching interview stage multiple times, he wasn’t converting these opportunities into offers.
It became clear that the issue wasn’t his capability, but his ability to communicate it effectively under pressure. Nerves were impacting his performance, and over time, repeated interviews had started to affect his confidence further. He found it difficult to clearly articulate his leadership experience and the value he could bring in a project management context.
Execution
Our work together focused heavily on interview performance and communication. We explored his leadership experience in depth, helping him to fully understand and own his strengths. From there, we worked on structuring his responses so he could clearly and confidently communicate his skills in an interview setting.
We also spent time on mock interviews, focusing not just on content but on delivery. This included improving body language, reducing filler words, and helping him present himself with clarity and confidence. Over time, there was a noticeable shift in how he approached interviews, moving from hesitation and self-doubt to a more composed and assured presence.
Outcome
As his confidence and communication improved, so did his interview performance. He successfully secured a promoted position within the sports sector, stepping into a project management role that aligned with his goals.
The role came with a salary increase and provided the progression he had been looking for, allowing him to move forward in his career rather than remaining in a role where he felt stuck.
Update
He has since relocated successfully and settled into his new role. He continues to build on his skills within the sports sector and reports feeling more confident in his ability to communicate and perform in professional settings.
The transition not only supported his career progression but also enabled him to move forward with his relocation plans, giving him both professional and personal momentum.
